A Note from Your Road Committee Chairman – Stan Wootton:

Your Road Association Annual Meeting, August 2011, unanimously approved an increase of annual road fees from $160 to $200.  This was deemed necessary and reasonable to maintain the road at the level of comfort and safety you expect.  To do so in recent years has required an annual expenditure of between $5,000 and $6,000.  The entire road is graded – repairs made to potholes, cave-ins and washouts – where necessary, the road bed and surface are brought up to an acceptable level with gravel and limestone.  The road bed (or base) must be kept at a level where repairs and resurfacing can be done effectively.  Improvements are not meant to build a highway – only a safe and sound seasonal road!

The amount spent each year is determined in consultation with our road builder, Don MacKay, after examinatiion of the road’s condition in May, and depends on funds available.  Usually more needs to be done than we can afford and repairs are often reduced to a bare minimum.  Things like tree cutting and improved ditching are often left undone.

Small fee increases over the years and cost increases for equipment and repair materials have gradually reduced our ability to keep the road at a desired level of comfort and safety.  Our increased fees will ensure a road kept in good condition and, hopefully, provide reserve funds for handling periodic severe damage from storms and sometimes misuse of the road.

Most of our 40 road members pay their fees on time, but each year there are a few arrears due to forgetfulness, long vacancies, changes in personal circumstance or ownership.  With follow-up, most of these are paid up.

For 35 years our road has been one of the best seasonal roads in the area – useable 6 to 7 months of the year at a nominal daily cost for each of us.  Your commitment to honour our friendly neighbour policy and pay your share has made this possible.  It all depends on you.  Thank you for your continuing support!  Have a happy summer and safe driving.

Road Fees for 2012                           $200.00

Earlybird discount of $10                 $190.00 if paid by May 31, 2012

Please make out your cheque right away, post-dated for May 31, 2012, payable to West Otter Lake Road Association (WOLRA) and mail to me at the address below.  Since we have very little reserve on account, it really helps to have road fees paid by the end of May so that we have sufficient funds to pay the contractor for the necessary grading and repairs.
